The Kauffman Family
Our Kauffman heritage is of German origin. John Phillip Kauffman and his wife and two young children emigrated from Sersheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1830. They arrived in Cleveland, Ohio when Kauffman was 39 years old.

One of the immigrant’s sons, also named John Phillip, was born in 1834. Son John married Sarah Hickman, and they moved to Jay County, Indiana. In this county Anna Minerva, a daughter of John and Sarah, was born and at the age of 17 married Samuel Perry Ball. Anna and Samuel Ball had four children, all daughters: Mearl, Vera, Thelma, and Opha. Mearl is the one who married the educator John W Elwell.
