The Stout Family

The Immigrants:  Penelope and Richard Stout

Penelope and Richard are my 8th great-grandparents.  Their colorful story has been discussed and analyzed for centuries.  The most recent addition is a historical novel Penelope:  A Novel of New Amsterdam by Jim McFarlane.  The book is available through amazon.com and other sites.  It weaves factual data with fictional elements (even a murder mystery) to offer enjoyable reading about the 1600s.  In order to understand the timeline and fact vs fiction, go to www.jim-mcfarlane.com.

The Diaries and Poems of Jane "Jennie" Brady Stout (1840-1934)

Jennie Brady and John Stout (a direct descendant of Penelope and Richard) were the grandparents of John William Elwell.  For several years in the early 1900's Jennie recorded her daily activities in a series of diaries.  She also was a prolific writer of poetry.  Her original diaries and poetry were donated to the Franklin County Public Library in Brookville, Indiana by Mary Elwell West and John Howard.  They can be viewed there in the Genealogy Room.  The originals were scanned and can be viewed on this website by clicking on Jennie's Diaries .  In addition, they are in the process of being transcribed by researcher Jon B Jacques, a descendant of the Stout family.
